POSITION SUMMARY: Performs repairs and maintenance on automotive equipment, heavy equipment, and gasoline/diesel powered engines and equipment. A person in this position diagnoses, determines what repairs need to be done, and arranges or makes such repairs. A person in this position also makes recommendations on purchases of parts, equipment, and accessories. This person also maintains records of orders for repairs and parts and maintenance records on equipment.


Essential Functions:

- Organize self and other assigned workers performing repairs and/or maintenance and developing schedules.

- Trouble shoot equipment / vehicle problems of all types. Handle various types of repairs and installations for suspension, drive train, mechanical, electrical, accessories, A/C, body work, exhaust, and other systems.

- Organize and be responsible for assuring that the right repair parts, equipment, and tools are identified and ordered for assigned jobs, including maintaining required records of these activities.

- May perform variety of preventative maintenance tasks, including keeping work spaces clean and organized.

- Attend schooling and keep up on state of the industry equipment and techniques.

- Operates and may field test heavy equipment and vehicles.

- Must fulfill the departmental overtime requirements.

- Perform related duties as required and not limited to: small engine repair, lawn care equipment and generator engines.

- Drive trucks for transporting materials, supplies, equipment and personnel including loading/unloading of materials and equipment.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- H.S. Diploma or GED required.

- Two years' experience as a mechanic.

- Valid Michigan Driver's License and CDL B license required within 90 days of assuming position. Must obtain the CDL A and N endorsement within 90 days of assuming position.

- Underground Storage Tank (UST) Class B certification required within one year of position qualification.

- State of Michigan motor vehicle mechanics certifications to work on automobile and light truck, heavy-duty truck and construction equipment required. ASE will be allowed if accepted by the State of Michigan.

- Ability to follow directives accurately and thoroughly and work without close supervision.

- Skill in organizing self and others; ability to self-start in discharging responsibilities.

- Ability to clearly communicate procedures, problems, and policies with fellow employees and the public in a tactful and courteous manner.

- Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, A/C, transmission, and engine problems.

- Ability to comprehend complex technical topics and specialized information; proficient in utilizing computers for communicating and controlling devices.

- Ability to read and work from diagrams, blueprints, maintenance manuals, electrical schematics and other written instructions to make appropriate repairs of vehicle/heavy equipment systems.

- Ability to perform heavy manual labor; ability to work in adverse environmental, extreme weather and field conditions.

- Knowledge of preventative maintenance and repair techniques of heavy equipment and vehicle.
